Today I will introduce about “Kagamimochi” which are the decoration of the New year.

2, What is the signification of “Kagamimochi”?
“Kagami” means a mirror in English
“Mochi” means a rice cake in English.
A mirror is one of the three sacred treasures of the Japanese Imperial Family.
Mirror symbolizes the Sun deity who is the supreme goddess in Japan.
A rice cake is regarded as a sacred food and a festivals food in Japan.
They had been combined in our long history.
“Kagamimochi” which shape is circular and flat has offed to the god/goddess in New Year.
And “kagamimochi “ is decorated by other lucky omens, too.
For example, bitter orange, kelp, dried persimmon, fern leaves and lucky paper crafts.
3, The” Toshigami”(The deity) is siting !
“Oshogatsu”( the new year) is the important event which welcome “Toshigami” into house.
“Toshigami” is the deity of the new year.
It is said that “Toshigami” brings happiness and health for a year.
“Toshigami” is coming at the night of New year’s Eve and going back on around January 15.
“Toshigami” come into our house because of guiding by “Kadomatsu” and “Shimenawa”.
Then “Toshigami” sit down on/in “Kagamimochi”.
4,How is “Kagamimochi” treated after New Year ?
It is broken on January11.
And we eat it with our family and relatives.
How to cook is as you like .
This Eating is a wish of health, happiness and longer life.
